I think it's a noble action, but I honestly couldn't personally do it.
Modern medicine, while amazing, is riddled with unintentional side effects. Even the most time tested medicines still seem to carry a pretty high percentage of danger with them. So when it comes to "trials" or unproven treatments, for some of us, it's no different than russian roulette.
