I'll second what another said about going to a range and renting a few different caliber handguns.  It's all about being comfortable with what you're firing.  Even if you start with a .22, get comfortable with it, and work your way up.

One thing people often overlook is carrying a gun is worthless if you're not constantly practicing situational awareness.
