Weather System In Midwest USA

We had sleet off and on today and they are using a term I had never heard before.  Graupel. Never really ever seen it before. Like big sleet.

Wonder why they are using the German word instead of just saying the usual hail or sleet?


Is that being politically correct or just thought they would add a new word to the weather vocabulary?! 
Who knows....well, we learned a new word. LOL
