I think the story of the Sheik's words and the "hard men good times" saying has been fused.

I heard that bit about the Sheik a long time ago, and it stuck with me.  What was "reported" back then was that he said his descendants would ride camels again once the oil was pumped dry and the wealth was gone.

Just a feeling, but that version strikes me as more authentic.
