"The old land lines were powered all the time. ALL the time. Even if your house power went out, that phone would still work because it had 45 volts running through it from batteries at the switching station. The hard part was getting into the house to get to the phone to bridge the contacts on the cradle so that the handset was live all the time, and able to pick up room conversations even when it was "hung up".
As a kid, young adult I was very into analog stuff. I designed for my own fun but never used as system that would turn on the mike on the head set of impulse phones, its surprising how good the mike was.
