New Madrid -- DEWs? Plate shifting? Big quake?
#4
My first question is "what is DEW?" - The only DEW I'm currently aware of is the "Distant Early Warning" radar line that scans for incoming missiles from a NORAD installation.

When New Madrid goes off, it can be felt for a long way. It slipped in, I believe, around 1810 and was felt all the way from New Madrid to the east coast. That is the one that created Reelfoot Lake in KY.

It depends a lot on the substrate how far it will carry - the one a few years ago that was centered in VA was also felt up and down the east coast, and it was only a 5.2. However, there is a solid mass of bedrock on the east coast that transmitted the shock wave handily. I was asleep on the couch in NC when it hit there. The missus at the time came running into the living room in a panic screaming "what is that?". I opened one eye and said "Relax. it's just an earthquake" and went back to sleep.

The odd thing about it was that only people who were indoors noticed it at all there. People who were outdoors said "what earthquake? I didn't see any earthquake!" A few years before that I was at work on a loading dock one day, and noticed all of the cars backed up to the dock rocked forward in unison, then back, and only once. I kinda rubbed my eyes wondering if I was hallucinating because they all moved, same distance and same time, and only once. It was when I got home that evening that I saw on the local news that there had been another earthquake in VA, centered just about where I am sitting right now, but in NC the only indication I got was those cars rocking - nothing more. It was kind of a letdown...

.
Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’
