Man shot and wounded after attacking police officer at Notre Dame.
'A man has been shot and injured after reportedly attacking a police officer with
a hammer at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
Police have warned people to stay away from the world-famous landmark, on the
Ile de la Cite island on the River Seine, via Twitter.
One officer was injured during the assault in the cathedral's courtyard before the
lone attacker was shot by colleagues.
The area in front of the cathedral has been sealed off, with French TV reporting that
tourists were fleeing the scene.
Sky's Foreign Affairs Editor Sam Kiley said: "We know from credible witnesses that
this individual appears to have been operating alone and is now lying inert on the ground."
The French counter-terrorism office has opened an investigation following the incident,
and the attacker has been taken to hospital.
Robbie Thomas, a witness, told Sky News "probably a couple of thousand" of people were
in the cathedral at the time - adding everyone was calm and "trying not to panic" as they
awaited announcements from police.
"A man I spoke to ran in from outside because he heard gunshots," Mr Thomas said.
Paris is on high alert following a series of Islamic extremist attacks in recent years.
