Bounty o' the Garden - F2d5thCav - 06-30-2020

Red currant berries harvested today.  They make a nice complement to vanilla ice cream.

RE: Bounty o' the Garden - Mystic Wanderer - 06-30-2020

Is that cherries?

My hubby has several cherry trees out back. We always have a time fighting the birds off before they can even get ripe to pick.
He's put wire over them, which they tore down, sat on the back porch and fired his BB gun at them, and all manner of things to try to keep them away, but they keep coming.

Any suggestions how to protect the bushes from the birds?

RE: Bounty o' the Garden - F2d5thCav - 06-30-2020

Not cherries, although we have a couple of cherry trees (not much fruit this year).

The currant berries are interesting.  They don't need much care other than occasional watering, and pests seem to leave the berries alone.  Birds don't eat them either, no idea why.

These berries are about the size of a pea.

Cheers

This is what the bush looks like (image: Wikimedia).

That is a sign to humans, not to eat in my opinion.
Have you eaten the berries on Vanilla ice cream?
Did they have a bitter taste or no taste at all?
If a bird, deer, bear or sheeple didn't eat it, I won't. JMHO

Hi @"guohua" ,

I think they're okay.  They are sold in markets and food stores in this area.  I read they are a good Vitamin C source.

Their taste is tart, but very mildly so.  Not bitter.

There is also a raspberry bush there, and other than ants, it doesn't attract pests. tinybighuh

Apparently, red currant berries are used to make jam as well.

Cheers

That is good to know.
It is odd that the birds and insects don't eat it or suck the juice.

But as long as you're healthy and it taste good, that is a Winner!

Started harvest on the second red currant bush.  This is about 1/3 of its berries, as well as the few cherries of a cherry sapling.

Also harvested the gooseberry bush today.  They are good for culinary uses, can also be used to make compotes.

Strawberry season here... we're getting about 5 pounds every two days so far.

So lots of goodies to make and a bunch of fresh strawberries going to friends...

I should have taken a picture, but I didn't think about it. My neighbor gave me the biggest and sweetest Jack fruit that I have seen in years.

She has a bumper crop this year and it was the first fruit from the tree I watched my neighbor plant.

Picture from the internet for those that don't know what a Jack fruit is. I can't quite tell you what it taste like. Some people say it taste like a cross of a pear, banana, and a pineapple. It is also said that it is where they got the flavor for Juicy Fruit gum. I don't think any of that. Jack fruit has a taste of its own. It taste like Jack fruit.

Oh, it can be very messy to eat, but for me that is half the fun.
