Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - senona - 05-23-2016 ![]() Quote:Wild bees are disappearing from substantial swathes of farmlands threatening crops across the United States, University of Vermont (UVM) researchers have warned. SOURCE Farmers and researchers have been worrying over the decline of honeybee colonies over the past several years, because fewer bees mean having fewer crops and smaller amounts of agriculture produce Quote:The U.S. is home to roughly 4,000 species of honey bees, however wild bee populations have contracted by 23 per cent between 2008 and 2013. The contraction is largely because of the destruction of their natural habitats. Increasing use of harmful pesticides, diseases and climate change are also having a disastrous impact on bees. Overall, wild bees declined across almost one-fourth of the country between 2008 and 2013 Quote:The FreshPlaza notes that, A new study into the declining wild bee population reveals that if the present situation continues, farmers will face increasing costs and the problem could even destabilize the nation's crop production. Might destabilize organic crops over time But that is where Monsanto has an advantage sadly and they know it (which many place blame on GM crops for decline in bees) ![]() RE: Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - Mystic Wanderer - 05-23-2016 This is an important message to humanity! We need to boycott GMOs and plant flowers to feed the bees. Oh, and stop using pesticides ourselves that harm the bees. When they're gone, so are we! RE: Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - senona - 05-23-2016 Not sure if we can undo what problems Monsanto has caused (and will always cause) But it is not just the bees, but bats too that are struggling.......and they are pollinators as well People want to get in a tizzy over .000000000000001 increase in temperature and start to panic (which many claim is a science scam) This stuff here IMO is a lot more serious and damaging for everyone and very real RE: Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - Mystic Wanderer - 05-23-2016 I just came across this article that I think should be included here: LINK EPA Releases Study On Pesticides Killing Bees, Gets Sued Immediately By Beekeepers ![]() Quote:EPA Releases Study On Pesticides Killing Bees, Gets Sued Immediately By Beekeepers I hope they win the case and put a good screwing to those who are trying to screw us! RE: Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - DuckforcoveR - 05-23-2016 "In recent years, farmers have been forced to hand-pollinate their trees, carrying pots of pollen and paintbrushes with which to individually pollinate every flower, and using their children to climb up to the highest ." Solve Unemployment? We may be forced into actually working for our food again if this trend continues. And I don't say "we" as a blanket statement for 7 billion people, more in a "spoiled by grocery store" kind of way. Scary scary stuff indeed. RE: Declining honey bee populations threatening crops - guohua - 05-23-2016 BUMP, BUMP, Yes I Did! I have an update and it appears it's not Climate Change or Global Warming or even Pesticides. It's called Deformed Wing Virus and they have found it's spread by the Varroa mite feeding on bee larvae and yes it still looks like Humans may be the cause. I'll attach the article so you can read it yourself. Quote:One question that has had scientists buzzing in recent years is, "What is killing the bees?" Many reports have documented the mysterious decline in honeybee populations around the world, with research focusing on possible causes including parasites, a type of pesticide called neonicotinoids, and other factors. Now, research out of the University of Exeter in the UK and the University of California, Berkeley, reveals another explanation: the spread of a viral disease, inadvertently helped along by humans. Yes there's more and you can finish the article here:Link |
