The church has often borrowed symbolism from elsewhere, just as it has taken over sacred locations and sacred days. But I'm not interested in looking for extra-Biblical sources for the teaching itself. The use of a cross as a Christian symbol was actually determined by the Romans' chosen method of executing people.
