I can't remember not having a dog around. First one was Rusty (an Irish Setter). The one before Luke was Socks (a tubular Schnauzer ... as in as fat as fat gets). Bunches in-between. I've had three favorites (Goliath, Sparky and ol' Luke here). People said Goliath had some wolf in him, but I think it was just Shepard. Sure was the family's protector though.
A vet told me that you can tell by the teeth. Hybrids have longer canines than pure German Shepherds. My female looked pure German Shepherd, but she had those telltale teeth, which prompted the vet to say "this dog is part wolf". When I asked him how he knew, that's what he told me.
