Not arguing with your main idea of the stability of countries as I agree there is merit there.
I would add, almost 20% of the Ukrainian population is ethnic Russians. That's one in five. With heavy concentrations in the east of the country especially, it may explain some of the "why".

I agree. Destabilized populations, either through demographics or economics, are weaker and more susceptible.
