Giants, as in actual people of extreme size, have existed in a number of populations around the world, of this I have no doubts. However, like all mythical creatures, there is a spiritual or symbolic aspect of giants. The characteristics and interactions of mythical creatures with normal humans in the legends usually relate to some natural elements like earthquakes, storms and floods, geographical features in the landscape, etc., along with origin stories and the like.
