They were armed?! I would think this A UNIQUE opportunity to defend a nation in tatters experiencing a Civil War (upon just arriving) one of supreme excitement and ADVENTURE! Embrace potential slaughter for righteous freedom ala (current historical examples) Teddy Roosevelt/Jack London/Ernest Hemingway....
