I'll never forget the exchange I had at the DMV when I moved from VA to NC. I went to the DMV to register my cars, one of which was the only new car I've ever bought, but I bought it in VA.
So the lady says there's a 2 1/2 percent sales tax on the car value, which was a substanital sum to me on a new car. I figured I could slick out of it, however, by stating the simple truth. "I didn't buy it in NC, I bought it in VA, so the sales tax has already been paid on it, in VA. You can strike that particular tax out of the bill."
The young lady behind the counter didn't so much as bat an eye. She said " Oh, I meant road use tax, not sales tax."
I was ok with that, since I planned on using NC roads. So I said "how much is the road use tax tax?"
"2 1/2 percent of the car value" she says, and kept right on calculating and adding the bill up.
Some times, you just can't win. Some days you eat the bear, other days the bear eats you.
