That's a chilling thought if carried just a bit further. Buy Twitter, buy Google, then use both of those to leverage a purchase of Facebook, and make all of them truly "free speech zones", then float a bid at some unspecified future date for US Presidency as "the man who restored free speech". Now, on the face of it, that seems a bit far fetched, as Musk was born in South Africa, and is not a "natural born" US citizen, and therefore barred constitutionally from becoming president... but Obama blew that boat out of the water, and made it edgy to elect foreigners to the US Presidency. So who knows? The problem there would be Musk being in control of information flow on social media. It's all well and good if he kept it really "free", but if not? Censorship in either direction, favoring either side of the debate, is just as bad in one direction as it is in the other. Censorship is still censorship, even when it favors your own side, and eventually those situations have a way of doubling back and biting you in the ass. Just ask a Republican, whose party forced through the 14th Amendment to prevent Democrats from gaining office in the South, and who are now under fire from that same amendment they forced through all those years ago... or, ask a Democrat, whose party gained a monopoly on social media "information" and welded that into a unified behemoth, and who is now facing someone else taking that behemoth over... . |
