In his address at Club Filipino in San Juan City on Thursday, the president said that he is “ultimately and legally responsible for it (killing).

According to the national police, the number of death toll was recorded at 192 since May 10, but media outlets placed the number of killings at 311, including victims executed by suspected vigilante groups.

President Duterte made clear that he is not protecting the police but just pushing them to do the job otherwise the country will become a “narcopolitic”.

However, he brushed demand that due process be given to the police accused of involvement in drug trade as well as other suspected drug traffickers, saying that it is the judiciary that will give the due process.

Duterte reiterated his promise to end the drug menace in the country “even at the cost of my honor, life and presidency.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” Rosa on Friday welcomed the creation of vigilante groups that will join the police in the intensified crackdown on drug syndicates.

He told the media that he attached importance to organization, mobilization and involvement of citizens in the fight against the drug scourge.

Bato likened the vigilante groups to the Alsa Malsa in Davao City that was organized during the 80s to counter the threat and growing influence of the New People’s Army in Davao region.
