For @"Mystic Wanderer" (story from 17 years ago)

So, we're having a house built along a new street in a gated community.  Going over and taking a look at progress from time-to-time.  It's getting to that point where we do the walk-thru and take possession of the keys from the builder.

So, I'm over there ... alone ... and there's a lady doing the final clean-up.  Getting rid of the fine, stubborn building dust, washing windows, polishing porcelain and marble.  And, it's her day to watch the granddaughter.  The little girl's tearing through the place.  Making sounds that echo through the empty rooms.  Grandma looks at me and hollers at the little girl to settle down.  I grin and say, "Let her be a kid."

A couple of weeks later we're moved in.  Furniture's all in its place.  Still too new for us to really feel comfortable.  This is a pretty big place for us.  It's an almost ranch.  My son's opted to move in to the bonus room above the garage.  When the wife's not cooking, she's comfortably nested in our bedroom.  My daughter is kind'a stuck all alone on the other side of the house where the bedrooms are.

At the time my daughter was about 13.  **Side Note - She and I have a little connection between us that we're both well aware of.  She can kind'a send out a signal ... and I know she needs me.  Me and my dad were like this ... right up to the point where my daughter was born.**. I know she's not afraid in the house, but her bedroom is on one side of the house, and everyone else is practically on the other. So the two of us spend time in the middle ... a cavernous living room with a vaulted ceiling, kind of open floor plan ... and this particular night we're watching a DVD on the entertainment system.

All of a sudden, out of the corners of our eyes, we this this figure tearing silently down the hallway that runs parallel to the living room.  It's moving across the house from the master bedroom/bonus room side towards the bedrooms on the other.  Both me and my daughter turn our heads to see who it is, but it never emerges on the other side of a load bearing wall that kind of defines the hallway.

I turn my head back to look at my daughter who's sitting there with mouth agape.  Whatever ran down the hallway, we both saw it.  All of this might have spanned five seconds.  And I'm up, pistol drawn, moving sideways to get a look down the hallway.  It's kind'a dark, but there's enough light that no one's gonna be able to conceal themselves in some shadow.  But ... nobody's there.  My daughter's looking at me with that look and that makes the hairs stand up all over.

I wave at my daughter to move off the couch and get behind me in the hallway.  I back her up to the master bedroom where she runs to mom and I holler out to my son to come down ... now!!  I hand him my Glock and tell him to cover the hall while I dash inside and grab my AR.  Without a word between us, me and my son start down the hallway clearing the house.

When I initially reacted off the couch, my daughter switched off the TV.  There isn't a sound (we don't wear shoes in the house).  We move towards the dining room ... one of two places that thing in the hallway could have disappeared into without me seeing it.  I flick on the light and can immediately see the room's clear.  The only other place it could have gotten to without me seeing is the front foyer.  There's a lot of airspace heading down that way.  Nothing could rush us fast enough to beat a trigger pull.  I've got the hallway lights blazing.  Whoever is in the house ain't getting away.  Turn the corner ... and nothing.

Me and my son clear the rooms on the far side of the house.  Wife's freaking out.  There's nothing else anyone can do.  That night, my daughter stayed in our room and my son took the Glock with him and locked the door behind him.

Next day, I called the lady who arranged the property purchase for us.  Asked about the chances of anyone else having ever lived on the property, squatters during build (figure the odds on that one), etc.  Then I realized what my daughter and I saw was the little girl who had been over playing, while her grandma cleaned.  The 'ghost' we saw running down the hallway moved just like her.  Same size and brightness.  I called our builder and asked him how I could contact the cleaning lady.  He told me she was a couple of houses down cleaning up another of his projects.  I walked over and found her there ... again with her granddaughter.  Nothing spooky at all.

I've recounted this story to others.  People who are quite spiritual.  Most of 'em come to the same conclusion I did.  That little girl left a memory behind ... so strong people could see it out of the corners of their eyes.  If I ever get back that way again, I'm gonna knock on that door and ask the residents if they've ever seen anything strange.

Wallfire

I have seen many many strange things, thing is they are not strange to me, but I have to say I have never seen a ghost or anything close to what most people call ghosts. People who often see what are called ghosts by most people have no fear of them and treat them as part of nature.
I believe that our own MW is one of these people and tells honestly about what she has seen.
Its people who  "want to be gifted" or want "attention" that cause the trouble and stop the truth from been found.
And yes I know about the mental problems that can cause seeing ghosts and also how people can be made to see ghosts under lab conditions, also group fear or peer pressure.
But like MW there are people who see things that others dont.

a positive energy imprint in the fabric of space of a happy time spent with her grandma, there are probably more
Thank you for that story @"Snarl".  tinybiggrin

Residual energy is picked up quite often with those ghost hunting groups. But how do you tell the difference between residual energy and a 'live spirit'?

This article helps to know the difference.

Quote:Residual energy is unchanging, non-interacting, and simply present energy in the space, which can be released and removed often with little work - such as with a smudging and an opening of the windows to get some air circulation in the space to break up the stagnancy.

I don't know that I've ever encountered residual energy. I may have, but it seems my contacts have always been intelligent spirits who communicated with me one way or another.
Some would flash the lights or make noises, knock on walls, or some would speak to me inside my mind; some would touch me, and one malevolent spirit grabbed my ankles and dragged me out of the bottom of my bed. tinyhuh

Here's an exercise to know if what you are encountering is a real "ghost", or just residual energy.

Quote:Next time you sense the presence of something, take a deep breath, close your eyes, and move in and out of the space - as though you are stepping in and out of a hula hoop placed on the floor.

In the circle, do you feel it?
Out of the circle, do you feel it?

Back in and out of the space a few times to see if what you sense is stationary. If you stop feeling it, that’s a sign it’s moved.
From there, walk around to see if you can find the source of what you felt before. If it’s a Spirit, simply ask it to reappear somewhere. When it does, try to see if it will respond to you. Ask it to do something or otherwise respond to your behavior.
Then, see what happens.

If it’s an intelligent spirit and wants to communicate with you, it will respond.
If it’s a residual energy, it will remain unchanged and non-reactive.
