Here is prime example boys and girls of why its important to know how to do things the old fashioned way rather than rely on all the high tech toys and gadgets ...... especially for things like outdoor survival ..... the damn electronic toys will fail and get you killed ......

fatal tech fail
How smart is it to follow a device and not your eyes and senses.
Greenhorns.

1) if you're not used to traveling in the dark, a dark, treacherous mountain trail is probably not the place to start learning.

2) "Apps" are cute at a coffee shop in the city, not so much out in the wilderness. the screen is too small to get any meaningful detail. If you blow them up to get good resolution, you lose map area - and probably the label on the map that says "here there be dragons", which, according to Murphy's Law, will be just off the edge of the screen, AND always in the direction you are walking.

3) if your bitty little screen has anything other than MGRS grid co-ords or lat/long co-ords for using with a map, your device is cute, but useless.

4) technology will kill you dead when over-relying on it.

5) Even an actual GPS or PLGR needs a map AND a compass to go with it to be used effectively. Apps are NOT actual GPS's, nor are they even close. What is called a "GPS function" in apps is actually just triangulation off cell towers, not real live GPS. It is NOT, repeat NOT nearly as accurate as an actual GPS - which again needs a map and compass to be effective.Built-in app maps don't get it - you may be as much as 300 meters off from where it says you are, which is an important thing to know when dealing with cliffs in the dark.

I'm firmly in the camp of... Don't persecute stupid people, just remove ALL of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Nin is da maaan!
