Authorities investigating the hijacking of a bus which left eight people dead and 22 injured have arrested a man.

'A 48-year-old man has been detained after hijacking the bus in Fujian province, south-east China.
Footage posted online showed police officers pouncing on the hijacker. 
A violent struggle followed and the suspect was detained.

The suspect -named only by his family name Qiu -took over the bus armed with a knife, before deliberately
driving it into pedestrians. Police say the man hijacked the bus in the city of Longyan after a dispute with a
neighbourhood official.

China's official news agency said late on Tuesday: "The initial police investigation showed that on that day,
the suspect had a conflict with an official of the neighbourhood committee, with whom he had long been at odds,
during the official's visit to his home.

"He then attacked people with a knife, hijacked a bus and used it to hit pedestrians."

As well as the eight people killed, 22 were injured, one of them seriously.
The Chinese government initially put the death toll at five.

Pictures on Chinese social media show a chaotic scene with crushed motorbikes and injured victims scattered
across the road. A policeman is believed to be among the dead.
An eyewitness with the surnamed Li, who works a nearby restaurant, told Chinese media she heard a bang around
3 pm and went have a look. She said: “I saw the bus crashing into cars and motorcycles, without breaking."

The tragic bus finally came to a halt in front of Longyan People’s Hospital near to Li's restaurant. 
“A man with a knife came out of the bus and the police surrounded him and took him down,” she added.
